Interior trends for 2021

With 2020 behind us and hopefully the worst of the pandemic behind us, we must also part with those “so-last-decade” interior design trends.

It’s the ideal time to get on board with 2021’s up-and-coming trends.

So, say goodbye to greys, neutrals, and plastic décor… and say hello to greens, florals, and home décor crafted with natural materials.

It’s out with the neutral and in with the natural!

Are you tired of staring at your grey walls, white curtains… and cushions… and sofas?

Well, my friend, you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s dig into some of 2021’s hottest interior design trends – unveiled with the emergence of a new decade.

Environmentally Aware Designs & Décor.

Consumers have become increasingly aware of the environment and have begun implementing eco-friendly alternatives to ensure a better future for humanity… starting with home décor.

As we greet the new year, many of us are trying to give up old conveniences in exchange for more environmentally aware interior designs. And by highlighting our intentions this year to minimise waste and recycle where we can we have to start living by our own rules. The word is spreading across the interiors industry and we enjoy working closely with companies such as The Haines Collection who aim reduce waste by selling on designer fabrics destined for landfill sites.

Bye-Bye Plastic. Hello Natural.

The rattan trend has lived out its days. Low-cost, disposable furniture substitutes are a thing of the past.

A new trend has arisen… one that will excite Mother Nature herself.

Biophilic design, an extension of biophilia (the inherent human inclination to connect with nature) - fuses natural light, natural materials, and vegetation with the modern built environment we know so well.

The Telegraph foresees antique furniture and raw wooden surfaces trending at substantial rates in 2021.

By reducing the demand for disposable décor, we can give back to the world that we rely on for survival.

Floral! Floral! Floral!

Homes & Gardens mentions wildflowers as a definite go-to for your interior design patterns.

By incorporating bold, eye-catching floral prints in your home’s upholstery, you can achieve the perfect amount of personality while avoiding a tacky or shoddy design.

And Who What Wear stands behind the floral trend as well.

Embracing Mother Nature's wild and tumbling style is timeless and yet always surprising.”

Naturally withered blooms and grasses are beautiful accents that can bring life to any room.

So, you can bet your bottom dollar that floral designs will be a rising trend in 2021 and for years to come.

It’s All About Colour!

Another trend for the new year is colour combination.

House Beautiful suggests a tip from the professionals:

If you’re stuck, look out for art, ornaments and fabrics with a colour combination that pleases your eye and use them as inspiration.”

When deciding on a colour theme for a room, it’s wise to limit your palette to three colours that complement each other – a central hue, a highlight, and a contrast. With the Pantone Colour of the Year, announced last December as ‘Classic Blue’ - the next step is working out how to implement alongside accent colours.

Neo-mint green, muted pink, and baby blue are a few foreseen accents to be trending in 2021.

Stripes Add Style.

According to Homes & Property, Made.com’s director of design stated:

A design classic from season to season, stripes have been modernised for the coming year through the use of trend-led materials and textures.”

Now, you don’t have to go all out and stripe your walls from top to bottom; instead, consider incorporating striped curtains or couch cushions to add just the right amount of artisan feel to your home.

Bringing It All Together…

With so many new interior design trends on the rise in 2021, the sky is the limit.
