Bring balance and comfort to your room with bespoke cushions
One question I often get asked, is how do I choose fabric for bespoke cushion covers? It’s a wonderful dilemma but when faced with it, I know how difficult it can seem.
Cushions can bring a real flourish to your home, as you’ll know at Willow & Bert we are partial to them around the house from the sofa, on the bed and to a cosy nook.
They somehow invite you to settle down whilst uniting what’s already in the room bringing balance and comfort … but sometimes working out those finishing touches can be challenging.
CHOOSING FABRICS for bespoke cushion covers
With a new season ahead of us, it’s a lovely time to change up the feel of a room - cushions can do that instantly without too heavy an investment. I always suggest to clients asking themselves a few questions:-
What will the cushions add? Is it colour, texture or a lovely flourish? As William Morris says “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”
Then think, what’s the function? Perhaps you’re after some beautiful lux or maybe there’s a practical need for making that window seat a little more cosy and comfortable. Considering this will help you work out how durable the fabric needs to fit the function of the space - adding in a delicate silk is a joy, but only in the right setting!
Next consider the fabric. Work with what’s already in the room, but you’ll want to avoid repetition so it doesn’t feel laboured. At Willow & Bert if we’re working with a plain fabric we add flair through a fabulous trim in a contrasting colour. Or, if we’re bringing in pattern, then a bold piping will give definition and intention working the cushion into the room.
We find cushions are a genius way to use up remnants of fabric or you can treat yourself to some new season fabric that catches your eye. Our clients have supplied us with all sorts of textiles - from heirlooms to a bolt brought back from travels - but we do love being asked to suggest ideas especially for difficult spaces.
Making to your bespoke size means that we can work with furniture to get a precise finish where it really matters like kitchen and dining chairs, favourite armchairs and beautiful bench seats.
A bespoke Willow and Bert cushion starts at £35*, they are made by hand in Kent and we use fine British feather cushion pads with an exacting amount of plump - yes, honestly - it makes all the difference - whether it’s a floor, bolster or scatter cushion.
I’d love to hear what plans you’ve got for your home. I am based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent and cover a large area.
Until next time.
