Add a statement armchair to your living room
Living rooms are often the most revered rooms in our homes and for many homeowners they provide an opportunity to really show off our keen eye for interior design. Many people obsess over the aesthetics of a living room over all their other rooms, whereas others go for simple comfort first and style second (or third or fourth even).
What will often pull the whole living room space together though is having a statement armchair, something guests will admire before sitting in. But only if they’re allowed to!
Blending the textures of your living room is a concept many people enjoy doing. If we think of our living rooms as a museum, there are wings and sections devoted to different collections, which is much like a living room space. Hard wood floor perimeters, sectional rugs around couches, stone fireplaces, wood framed artwork and entertainment devices all contribute to the unique character of the room (like a museum). A luxurious velvet fabric statement armchair therefore, contributes just as much as these other features, more even.
Or maybe a warming high back brown leather chair is more to your taste? Whichever texture you choose for your statement armchair it must speak to you and your aesthetic eye.
A contrasting coloured statement chair is often the path many people take when choosing. Consider the overall ‘tone’ of your living room. Is it filled with muted hues and lots of natural light entering the room? Then a bright statement armchair will look great, as it will reflect the mood of the room. If much of your other furniture, flooring and walls are darker and warmer in colour (think blacks and greys) then a funky colour like yellow or a totally contrasting white may be just the thing the room needs to add a spark of brightness.
For many people, a statement armchair is closer to artwork than being strictly functional like their couch. The statement armchair becomes an extension of the pieces on the walls and shelves and is not really intended for ‘prolonged comfort’ shall we say. For many people entering someone’s living room they may look at a statement armchair and think how anyone could even find it comfortable! But comfort, sometimes, isn’t the intention of the homeowner and it’s important to remember that functionality sometimes takes a backseat when it comes to their artistic and design vision.
So when it comes to finding that statement armchair for your home, ditch all your preconceptions out the window and think about what you actually want in your living room. You’ve already got a comfortable couch, shelf space, art on the walls and rugs. Now all you need is that one thing that will intrigue everyone when they enter your living room.
Be brave, be bold but most of all make sure your statement armchair is a statement about you too.
